Director, Product Development Team Lead

Leadership role responsible for managing product development plan to the agreed strategy (on time, on budget and within scope) including management of cross-functional project team(s), project reporting and interfacing with customers, subcontractors and internal management.

Job Spec
  • Leadership role responsible for providing scientific strategy and oversight for product development program(s)
    • Works collaboratively with the product development team (PDT), and other external experts as appropriate, to develop and implement a robust research, development, and commercialization plan, aligned to the TA strategy and business objectives
    • Has overall accountability for driving the technical components of the TPP and the entire IDP
    • Create, oversee and provide leadership, technical and strategic direction for cross-functional team to deliver project(s) including management of project development teams and subteams
    • Work closely with project managers, other functional groups (QA, Clinical Development and Business Development) and Program Steering Committee to provide scientific direction and oversight to ensure that project and team needs are met
    • Ensure project execution, including financials, schedule, resource constraints, critical path, risks, contract status, and other appropriate project performance indicators, per agreed upon integrated product development plan
    • Proactively identifying, assessing and managing project risks
    • Clearly communicating project status, issues, and successes to senior management and government clients
    • Leads strategic recommendations for and at governance meetings
    • Develops options and scenarios for investment strategies
    • Leads PDT to develop go / no-go criteria
    • Drives cross-functional alignment with PDT members and supporting functions and elevates areas of misalignment when appropriate
    • Delivers and communicates risk / opportunity management plans as well as clear and effective issue management and escalation
    • Escalates functional dispute(s) to PSC for resolution
    • Secures, allocates and manages resources (FTEs and budget) necessary to execute the approved plan
    • Make decisions on behalf of the PDT where alignment is not reached within the PDT
    • Transparently, and in a balanced manner, shares risks, opportunities, and project progress with key stakeholders and the PDC
    • Acts as voice of the project to key internal and external stakeholders, the PSC and PDC
    • Communicates PDC and PSC decisions to PDT
    • Makes strategic choices and assesses implications that would impact budget
    • Build and strengthen the Program core team(s) that role leads
    • Work efficiently with product development team project manager to create strong and healthy Program leadership team
    • Empowers PDT members and functional support to make decisions and deliver to plan
    • Ensure team effectiveness including setting team member expectations and providing coaching and feedback to direct reports.
    • Demonstrate strong use of core competencies with a focus on building cohesive and high performing teams, fostering resourcefulness, and engaging in healthy conflict.
    • Establish and manage technical, business, and contractual relationships with vendors, consultants, and government clients
    • Develop and implement technical strategies for identifying and reviewing new opportunities, including preparing contract and grant proposals to secure external funding

Person Spec
  • BS degree in life sciences required. Advanced degree in life sciences (MS, PhD, PharmD) or MBA degree a plus
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in a pharmaceutical or biotechnology environment
  • Demonstrated experience building and leading strong cross-functional teams
  • Direct experience in managing product development projects is desired
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including negotiating, influencing, and active listening
  • Fluent with regularly used software applications (MS Word, MS Excel, MS Project, MS PowerPoint, SharePoint)
