Our client, a biotech company based in greater Dublin, have an outstanding track record of innovation in their specialist therapeutic sector. This lead program-based role is a unique opportunity for a Principal Design Engineer SME at a development-stage company, being a key contributor to Senior Leadership team on this next generation of medicine.

This SME role will require highly talented Principal Design Engineer to lead the MedTech aspects of development cycle through to commercialisation, of what is novel cutting-edge technology focusing particularly oncology applications.

The Principal Design Engineer will be the primary liaison on engineering and design projects between company technical operations and external partners. The successful candidate will lead product development of Medtech projects, with specific ownership for: technical guidance on all areas of design; material, component and supplier identification and selection; vendor management on outsourced engineering and manufacturing activities. In addition to technical responsibilities, this hire will provide timely, accurate and concise summaries and project reviews to the Senior Leadership Team.

The preferred candidate will be seasoned Mechanical Design Engineer operating at Principal level in MedTech industry, in leading NPD project activities from product development through to commercialisation. Strong entrepreneurial mindset & skill-set required for this standalone role in start-up environment.

Personal attributes will include action-oriented individual, who is comfortable in taking project ownership and responsibility with competence to deliver. Proven ability to work with peers and cross-functional teams is required.

Requirements for Principal Design Engineer:

  • Degree level qualification in Product/Mechanical/Manufacturing/Biomedical Engineering or other related discipline.
  • 10+ years industry experience, 3+ years of which in MedTech, Biotech or Pharmaceutical industries, ideally on combination products. Alternatively experience in other highly regulated industry may suffice.
  • 2+ years in Principal Engineering role, with demonstrated history of leading projects with internal and external team members.
  • Proven experience in leading the technical and engineering projects, with external development and manufacturing partners ranging from prototyping runs to commercial scale manufacture.
  • Extensive expertise with supplier and vendor identification, selection and management for materials, components, subassemblies, design and manufacturing engineering as required.
  • Demonstrable technical capabilities with Design Dossiers, Technical Files, Product Specifications, Design FMEAs, Design Verification Protocols and Reports.
  • Proven experience in a hands-on approach toward product development using DOE and DFM techniques. Expertise with FEA and CFD is required.
  • Lean, Agile or Scrum qualifications an advantage.
  • Experience with Solid Edge, SolidWorks, Pro/E, etc. design software packages.
  • Effective communication skills (both written and verbal).
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good presentation skills.

Expertise Required for this role:

  • Creative individual who can develop product solutions lead implementation of solutions
  • Knowledge of 3D printing, Injection moulding, prototyping and design for manufacture
  • Self-starter capable of identifying opportunities
  • Knowledge atomisation or spraying technologies
  • Familiarity with GMP and regulatory processes
